It’s World Education Day today! This year’s theme is “Recover and Revitalize Education for the COVID-19 Generation”
Education is a human right and everyone should have access to lifelong learning opportunities helping them to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to fully participate in society. This is why we strive, not just today but 365 days a year, for the development of meaningful education through sports and play.
The enormous global learning disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic affected more than 1.6 billion lives of students in over 190 countries. In the rural areas of the East African countries we are active in, we have experienced the consequences to be severe. This is why raising awareness for and focussing on recovering and revitalizing education has never been more important.
Despite the grand educational challenges this pandemic brings, we have an optimistic outlook on 2021. All primary schools within the Join for Joy program are open again from next week onwards. We have launched the “Back to School Campaign” to make sure to make sure that once the schools reopen, the kids will actually find their way back from the fields to school. Next to that we have introduced the Community Based Approach Program in which we not only focus on the children but also on their caretakers. Through sensitization of parents on their roles and responsibilities towards their children, they get reminded of the value of education and the importance of sending their children to school.
Our goal for 2021 is to give 20.000 more children the chance for a brighter future through playful learning in school.
