This weekend NRC Handelsblad (Dutch newspaper) published an interview with PhD psychologist Scott Berry Kaufman by Ellen de Bruin, called ‘Dromers zijn niet dom – ze denken’ (Red: Dreamers are not stupid – they think). Kaufman emphasizes the importance of play for kids, and criticizes the general lack of attention to play on schools.
According to Kaufman, play satisfies our basic human needs including freedom, connectedness and flow. Through playing together, children learn how to regulate, how to negotiate, how to solve disputes. Play lays the foundation for future success in mathematics and other bèta sciences.
